Anvil or Hammer

pleasant disappointment

Posted in Dinsoaur Style,Gym Strength by Mike on March 19, 2008

I didn’t go to the gym tonight, I had my reasons and one them was a 2″ axel clean and jerk in June that I just signed up for. 230lbs on an axle. I think I’ll be ready for230 more than or 2″. So I thought I’d work on it.

Warmup 24K kettlebell 5/5 X 4

2″ Dumbbell C&J 50lbs 5 X 5/5
This did not go as expected at all. It was way too easy on both the back and hands. If there is such a thing a “pleasant disappointment” this is it. So I made some changes on the next exercise.

Double 2″ Dumbbell deadlift 60lb 5 X 10/10
This was planned to be a one handed deadlift for low reps with 65lbs but the last exercise left me feeling stronger than expected. The 10/10 above though could be viewed as misleading. The first set was the only one where I didn’t have to shake my hands out at least once, usually twice.

Outer Limit Loops 5lbs 6/6, 7/7, 8/8
In an effort to achieve some balance in the beating I was laying on my hands, I broke out my Iron mind Outer Limit Loops. The first set was all about the learning curve.  I wanted to go on up to ten but the outside of my left hand started to hurt and swell. I went and washed my hands for a few minutes in cold water and it went away. I decided that was it.

The workout ended up being easier than I expected but it went well. I’ll have to figure out how to make it a more regular part of my goings on. The best news for tonight was no On Call phone calls. I wonder how my coworkers will feel if I give them back the On Call phone with chalk worked into all the little crevasses.

Tonight, I think I will finish the leisure reading book, Making Money (thanks Karianne) I have been working on since the end of Good Calories,  Bad Calories , and start The New Rule of Strength Training.

Oh, and Scott was bragging up his nerdiness on his blog (and I was duly impressed) so let me announce that this is being written from the brand new Linux partition of my laptop. 🙂 I’m not as cool as Scott but I’m working on it. And for those folks who may not have understood what I just said, you’re better off for it.

More tired than ever

I’m pretty sure you’re supposed to have a license to use puns as bad as mine.

Hit a semi tire with my 10K (not a mistype) hammer, ladder (10/10,20/20, 30/30,20/20 X 2, 10/10 X 5)
Run with the smaller tire (45lbs inside) across the soccer field and back(yrds)
all in one long super set

I didn’t take a watch or a heart rate monitor so I have no idea how long it took me. It was hard though. It’s in the upper 30s here and I was sweating up a storm in my shorts and t-shirt.  I have muscles that are already putting me on notice that tomorrow may be an off day.

I should probably also mention that yesterdays kettlebell video was the culmination of 30 minutes of kettlebell juggling.

…but not quite all the way

I thought I might take a crack at 100 clean and jerks with a 100lb sand bag. I did good but couldn’t go the distance, exhaustion and abuse set in after a while.

10 reps – 1:27
10 reps – 2:17
10 reps – 2:24
10 reps – 2:59
10 reps – 4:30
rest – 3:16
5 reps – 1:43

I tried to use 160 bpm as my marker that it was time to start another set. The rest after set five was me going to 100 bpm. For once I had a chair with a back to sit in. The best recovery I have ever had. It still didn’t prepare me to go around again.

train through play

Posted in Dinsoaur Style by Mike on September 17, 2007

I like these little “just move” workouts I have made up. It’s like playing….

Deck Squats 16K X 10
Burpees X 10

Then I played around with pistols. I did some doorway pistols, definitely a lot of work to do there. Then I did some wall assisted handstand presses, about 3.

Then I made dinner, mmmm.

Peter Gabriel – sledgehammer
I dug out my 10lber after a long rest in the closet. Nothing to special, just a little light levering in all directions. I was waaaay choked up on the handle. I need to do more with that. If not for strength, for wrist mobility. Then it was off to the park where I apparently almost killed the dog by making her walk too far in the hot, humid weather. Not quite what I was going for. She’s all better now.

I hope I’m able to roll my butt out of bed tomorrow morning. I have a workout set up that I have wanted to do since last week.

A Hill

Posted in Cardio,Dinsoaur Style by Mike on July 21, 2007

We’ve found a lovely hill at Oregon Ridge State Park. it hasa hill that is called a ski slope. Having lived in Colorado, I can’t totally get behind that. It is one heck of a hill though. A quarter mile I’d guess. I’ve walked up it a few times now. A jog is what I’m really driving for. I don’t think I’ll make it the first time but I’ll do what I can. There are a whole mess of trails back in the woods too, I’ll have to take a walk back there some day as well.

I hope my battery doesn’t die

It’s a beautiful day and I have been on the porch trying to writh my first Visual Basic application for the last two hours. It’s going well but I have a long way to go. It’s training related, believe it or not. I have several versions to go through befor I get to what I really want it to be. I’ll post it up here as I pass certain milestones. Right now, you put in an amount of time you’d like to train, a number of sets and/or a set length and it tallies it out and tracks your time for you.

I did Providence yesterday. I just tried to make it through and I did ok.

Today I went to the gym with the rower…and they were closed. Oddly I was able to walk in and walk around. It was just dark and no one was there. I thought about rowing anyway but that room was locked. So I came home. I felt compelled to do something so I went to the park with my 16k kettlbell, my tire (with a 45lb plate inside) and a 100lb sandbag

10 snatches
Sandbag carry
tire drag
and repeat, several times.

yardage was  20, 10, 10, 20, 20, 10, 10, 20

So eight sets total. Total time of 22 minutes, average heart rate of 170 and max of 180. It was a pretty decent workout. I’ll have to make up a park workout for wednesday cause the gym will be closed then for Independence day.

Gotta go, battery will die.
