Workout 19 Episode 2

Posted in Uncategorized by Mike on November 29, 2011

It looks like I forgot to log episode 1. I’mnot counting that half assed attempt a couple days ago

1/2 TGU 24K 12/12 really focused on ROM. If I want more reps I’m gonna have to stop doing 1/1, think I’ll got to 2/2 next time

Thruster 16K X 2 65 great depth, messing with rack position, gonna have to check in with Kurt on this one

Russian Twist 16K 75 these felt much better heavier

Scorpion PU 29/29

Dbl Snatch 16K 101

I told Kurt the other day “the reason I’ve not gotten into jujitsu is because I realize that I would do it 2-3 times a week and if I do that I have to sacrifice my workout time and I’m not sure I’m ready for that”. Now that I’ve voiced it, I can’t stop thinking about it. I’m really wondering if that is true. There is no strength training quite like the active resistance of another human being.

Gonna try a light AM tomorrow, no PM, light AM Thurs, Full PM Thurs, light AM Fri, no PM Fri.

Missed a week

Posted in Uncategorized by Mike on November 27, 2011

With the holiday last week, I missed an entire week. I came into this workout feeling way out of shape and feeble. I opened with 30 minutes of screwing around with pilates just to get my ROM down to my ankles (from mid shin). I figured it’d be an abbreviated workout

1/2 TGU 24K 12/13 = 25(I found it hard to believe I was that far off from last time’s total, hoping I miscounted)

Thruster 16K 50 I believe I was ten short. I Was getting really deep and holding it for a bit

Russian Twist 110 the twist tested way better than scissors but by the end I had lost ROM and motivation.

Not my best work

Deadlift 225 74

1/2 Snatch Press 24K 5/5 X 7 + 4/5 = 79

Swing squat 24K 5 X 14 + 2 = 72

TGU 24K 8/8

MTN Jump 5 X 14 = 70

Tomorrow I go see Kurt

Today I was feeling good, my diet this week has been clean, I feel lean, I’m good to go. Then I hopped on the scale it hit 238 then slowly made it’s way back to 239. A bummer, I’m gonna be lucky to break even tomorrow. I have to keep the good news in my head, I feel like I’ve found the diet that will carry me past this plateau.

Monday Check-in

Posted in Uncategorized by Mike on November 14, 2011

Weight 238.8

I was not particularly well disciplined last week with food. This week I’m making a couple tweaks to try and make it easier to be compliant. Additionally last eve I watched Fat Head, a documentary about the dangers of high carb diet, even more about the value of a high fat diet. It reminded me of when I read Good Calories, Bad Calories (partially because it’s largely based on it). It also reminded me of Feb ’08 when I did low carb, almost all beef diet.

So, the plan for this week is that I’m going back to eggs for breakfast, I tried it this morning and enjoyed it and had plenty of time to get to work on time, which I had been concerned about. I’m also making some extra meat to eat as needed during the week, if I’m feeling peckish, it’ll be meat for me. Workout-wise, I lifted yesterday, I may lift tonight, tomorrow is dodgeball, Wednesday will probably be off, Thursday is Kurt and Friday is groceries.

In other random news, I went out and did an Orienteering meet last Friday. It was a 3 km course in the dark. It was awesome. I enjoyed running around in the woods, in the dark. It took me a bit to get settled into orienteering as I haven’t done it in a while but once I got to it, it was really relaxing.  I look forward t my next one.

monday Morning Weigh In: 240.0

Posted in Uncategorized by Mike on November 7, 2011

I’m running a little heavy this week and there is no doubt in my mind it is due to my lack of motivation last week to both stay on diet and get my workouts complete. This week, I believe, will be much better. I’m definitely more charged up to behave properly. I think there are two major factors:
1) Sleep – going into last week I was sleep deprived from the outset. What I should have done is taken Monday to catch some extra z’s, what I tried to do instead is bully through. I don’t sleep 8 hours a night or anything but if I can’t get 5, I’m pretty messed up.
2) See what’s out there – the single biggest motivator seems to be seeing all the cool things that exist to do. In the past looking at mud runs has done a great job of this. This weekend I spent some time trying to populate our calendar with stuff we wanted to do like trampoline dodgeball, orienteering, snow shoeing and more. Those things make me want to train hard so I can get out and do more of them.
I’m hoping to ride this wave of excitement through the week. I’ve got training tonight, which will be tough because I just started the new program last eve, Tuesday is off, Wednesday is training, Thursday is optional trainig and Friday is an orienteering course. I’m not even thinking about the weekend yet.
Next week I visit Kurt. I imagine I’ll still be running heavy but that’s the way it goes when you get off discipline.

Workout 18 Episode 1

Posted in Uncategorized by Mike on November 6, 2011

Deadlift 225 lbs 68 reps (looks like I’ve hit 70 before, I’ll surpass that in a couple attempts here)
1/2 Snatch Press 24K 5/5 X 6, 0/3 = 63 (I’m sure we’ve done these before but I can’t find a number to compare to)
Swing Squat 24K 54
TGU 24K 15
MTN Jump -> Pushup 30 (This is essentially a burpee sans jump. I had to stop because I could feel a very unhappy pulling in my hand. I’ve had the same experience before, when I way overstretched my plantar fascia, it aches for days, I stopped early to avoid this in the hand. It’s a sign my wrist mobility is still crap)

This was a decent workout for a lazy Sunday. I’m excited about training this coming week.

Excuses Excuses

Posted in Uncategorized by Mike on November 3, 2011

It’s been a slow workout week. I’ve got a lot of excuses but not much to show for them
Monday: didn’t sleep much Sunday night plus it was Halloween so there were little kids at the door off and of all night.

Tuesday: Trampoline Dodgeball, this was fun and a decent workout.

Wednesday: lower back tightness from the trampoline left me a bit feeble.
Dbl Snatch 16K 10 X 10 – got some wicked blisters for this. I think I need to do some high volume snatches each week to keep the hands conditioned.
Burppes – I think it was 49
That was it for Wednesday night

Thursday – I have a friend who wanted to get together so I doubt there’ll be  workout in it for me

Friday – Grocery night

Saturday – Invited the boardgame group over already. I may be able to squeeze in a workout but I’m not banking on it

That makes Sunday the likely next day for a workout. Between now and Sunday I have some homework for myself. I have noticed over the last week that my motivation has fallen off. I’be been less disciplined in my eating and in my training. I’m going to work on finding that motivation again. I’ve got a few ideas, I find watching the Spartan race videos uplifting so maybe I’ll make some time for those each day. I also have thought about just spending a few minutes each day meditating on my goals for next year. I’m also going to work on removing some distractions. With Halloween having just happened, there seem to be sweets everywhere, I’ve got to clear them out of the spaces in which I live and work. Additionally I started messing around with an online game, I think it’s time to disconnect myself from that, it’s just one more thing to do instead of training.

On the good side I’ve gotten more involved with outdoorsy people. I’ve joined several new meetup groups, one seems to be working out really well. It was with one of these groups that I went and played dodgeball this week and with whom, next week, I’ll be a night time orienteering course.  So those are all on the right track and I’m very excited by that.
