Anvil or Hammer

Executive decision

Posted in Uncategorized by Mike on May 28, 2009

I got pointed toward the gym and realized I didn’t have my workout. I got to thinking and thought I might row…then I thought I might not. Eventually I settled on a bunch of clean and jerks. As it turns out I could have done the kettlebells as I had my sheet from last time and it would have been the same workout, buthad mentally committed myself. I’m pretty happy with what I did. 50 Clean and Jerks in sets of about 5, all done in about 20-30 minutes. I did a bit witha  medicine ball after that, overhead throws at the wall. I attempted to use my HR monitor but it’s definitely gone. So I’ll look forward to getting a new one of those.

The first of classes was a good one class-wise but ab a D+ training-wise. Next week will be far better.

Already off my game

Posted in Uncategorized by Mike on May 27, 2009

Yesterday was typical of me. It was the first day of classes so I wanted to make sure I had enough time to get to school, buy my books, get and upated ID, workout, shower and get to class. As often goes with these things, I over plan and trip myself up, but not in a major way. I got through the workout and found I had only 30 minutes til class. I hopped down to the showers and took a quick one and bounced off to class.

I got there and the door was locked, it seemed like no one was around. I begin questioning a lot f things but I double checked myself: right room, starts at 5:30, start May 26th. Then I realized that in my intense desire to not be late I hadn’t read the clock closely, I still had an hour. Typical.

The workout itself went very well despite one major annoyance, by the third exercise my heart rate monitor read 38, by the fourth it read 00. After that it wouldn’t give me any heart rate info. I don’t know if I just need a new strap or if I need a whole new rig. I’m eyeballing the F7, it has all the nifty, uploady features that the geek in me like but is relatively cheap ($129 cheap compared to all their othat, also overpriced, products).

Then last night I woke up about midnight and couldn’t get back to sleep for a couple hours. When I started to get close, my left calf decided to just cramp. That woke me back up and I took a hot bath to try and rub the cramp out. It’s better but I never got back to sleep. I have class tonight but I think I’m going to skip rowing. I’m a big fan but neither my head nor body are in the right place.the workout itself yesterday was the first day of Strength in Motion by Art of Strength. It went better than I expected and it went better than it did when I did it a year ago.

7 weeks begins tomorrow

Posted in Uncategorized by Mike on May 25, 2009

I’ve had a long, lazy weekend. I haven’t done any training and I’ve definitely been overeating. My rationale, 7 weeks begins tomorrow. Tomorrow is the first day of the summer semester. For those 7 weeks I will work from 7am to 3 pm, workout from about 4pm to 5pm, sit in class from 5:30pm until 8 pm, arrive home ab about 9 pm and go to bed between 9 and 10 pm, Monday through Thursday. Fridays I won’t have class and I’ll probably skip the workout, that’ll be my night off from everything and the weekend will be spent doing home work for the four days of class. Exciting stuff, right?
Today I’m working on a couple web things and I need to finish at least the first week of my workout plan so I can go in armed with everything I need.

Seems like it should be friday

Those heartrates are total lies, in the last ten minutes my monitor was failing. It read 70 for a while then 200 for a whiel, the entire rest of the time I was in the 160’s. No real pattern to this, a lot of regular flips, just something different to do.

Bodyweight 244.0  – belly full of curried rice so this wasn’t too bad. The rice was delicious

32K kettlebell
Clean and Jerk X 100
I did these alternating sides on each rep with a complete set down on each rep.  I probably should have gone for more, with the slow pace it was surprisingly doable

I had intended to go for twice that but it didn’t seem in the realm of possibilities, I was doing at least 50% more swings per round than expect so I think that contributed

The end of morning workouts – again

Posted in Uncategorized by Mike on May 12, 2009

I knew the time would come and I didn’t know when. I decided it was today. I hate workouts first thing in the morning but they seem to be symbolically important  to me. They’re good for helping me start a habit.

bodyweight 244.0

C&J 24K kettlebell 10/10 X 5 + 1/1 X 2 = 104
Time: 10:00
Avg Hr 172
Max Hr 183
This was interesting in a couple ways. First, per usuual, I lost count a few sets in. I was pretty sure I was on four but when I watched how long it took me to complete a set, it looked like it was only 3. Later math revealed that the difference was half a second per rep, so it’s possible I was on four, now we’ll never know. I did either 100 or 110. Second, I wasn’t going for a 10 minute time perid but it was 9:30 at 100 (my original goal) so I thought, why not.

just some stuff I’m thinking about

Posted in Uncategorized by Mike on May 11, 2009

Five things to do between now and the start of the summer semester

  1. Make good on my commitment to host another contest
  2. Shape up my RSS reader so I can see more of the blogs I want and less of the garbage
  3. Compile an actual training plan for the 6 weeks of the spring semster
  4. Work on hitting AoS, farmstrength and gripboard at least weekly
  5. Catch up with some of the folks I’ve not been keeping in touch with

Five things that’ll just have to wait

  1. Create a good homepage for anvilorhammer.com
  2. Do some more videos
  3. Set some goals, make some projects
  4. tag all my posts that I have been too lazy to tag
  5. Run a bunch of stats on the numbers I have compiled

10 more minutes

Posted in Uncategorized by Mike on May 11, 2009

AM
mountain climber 25/25
supine bicycle 10/10

These were harder than anticipated. I’m fairly certain I get winded at a much lower heart rate and amount of effort in the morning than in the afternoon.

PM

24K kettlebell
10 minutes – 160 reps
Time: 10:00
avg Hr 169
Max hr 177
I actually lost count. I was either at 80 0r 100 at just over 5 minutes, last time has me at 110 so I think 100 was probably the right count. I feel like I left a little in the tank on this, I’ll have to do better next time

Bodyweight 244.0
I’ve been trying to weigh myself right before I workout in training gear to get the most accurate and what I am calling “real” weight possible. I forgot so this is immediately post workout. I was abnormally liberal with calories this weekend. Not terribly egregious but not well mannered either.

Today starts finals for me. I have 3 exams, I hope to do one each on Mon, Tue, Thur. I’ll take Wednesday off from class and training.
