work got the better of me

Posted in Uncategorized by Mike on January 17, 2009

I hadn’t intended to go 3 days without any training, it just came to me easily. This week we migrated emails systems at work, I was probably only there an extra hour or hour and a half per day but it was enough to stomp on any desire I had to do anything. Couple that with the weather and our oven acting up for a couple days and I just took the easy way out and didn’t do much. I did try to keep a handle on my eating though. I did grab a teriyaki wrap one day, that was tasty but way more than I needed to eat. Prior to the holidays I would grab this same wrap and then go looking for more. This week, I ate half of it and thought, I should stop. Alas, I still haven’t developed the discipline for that yet, however I did go very light on supper that night.
Today I decided I had to train, to do something, even if it wasn’t much.

24K kettlebell Clean and Jerk 10/10 X 5
Time: 9:11 (I did rest, 1:20 and a little over a minute)
Avg Hr 164
Max Hr 180

I can probably use this as a benchmark down the road.

I thought a bunch more about he Warrior Diet Dan referenced in his comment on the previous post. My visceral reaction to reading about it and reading a chunk of it was complete revulsion. The pseudo science it claims to be based on should require jail time of the author. There’s no basis at all for it. That said, what if I looked at the diet another way, what if instead of all the fluff, conjecture and the occasional flat lie, someone just said “Here’s the idea, you eat whole and raw foods, you eat as little as you can but without getting exhausted and dysfunctional each day, then at night, you have a huge meal, all you can eat, still whole or raw but whatever you like within those boundries”. Well, if someone said that, I would say it sounds like an interesting proposal. It’s not all that far off from what I’m doing now, a single bowl of oatmeal, about a cup or so of food several hours later then a normal dinner.

Although, I must confess, writing that out draws me to a whole new conclusion. Slimfast used to say “a shake for breakfast, a shake for lunch, then a sensible dinner”. How is that different than the warror diet or what I’m doing? Well, you could argue that they aren’t using whole foods. Although if you take a single meal from a restraunt or from a box, it could be argued that you are less “whole food-ish” than slim fast of the 80’s. It makes for an interesting thought train. I guess, in the end, everything old is new again…yest, we’re no closer to a large scale solution.

Biggest Losers gaining weight

Posted in Uncategorized by Mike on January 13, 2009

My office mates who are playing biggest loser, the couple I asked about it, either gained or stayed the same in the last week. Interesting.

I’ve been good, more or less on my diet. I’ve been eating oatmeal after I get to work and drinking a cup of tea with it. Late morning I have been having my fruit and then about 1 pm I’ve been eating leftover chili, about a cup I would estimate it at.  Tomorrow I’m taking one of my guys out, he finally cracked the code barrier and his new page should be ready to go this week. His favorite place is a sandwich place so I’ll just get a sandwich, a cuban.

Tonight’s training:
With a 16 Kettlebell
Turkish Getup
Overhead Squat X 5
Reverse Lunge with a press X 5
One Leg Straight Leg Deadlift x 5
Jerk X 5
Row X 5
Wood Chopper X 5
Turkish Get Down
do one side entirely then the other, 5 sets of both sides
Time 26:18
Avg HR 160
Max Hr 178

I wouldn’t change a thing about it, I was hoping to hit about 25 minutes. It was hard and pretty constant but the breaks seemed to be in just the right places. I’m pretty happy with this workout.

Monday Morning Weigh In: 256.0

Good progress, I wouldn’t expect it to maintain. Gotta start putting money away for new clothes though.

This morning I’m trying Gene’s suggestion of eating breakfast later. It probably wasn’t the best day to start it since I had to give a training session at 7 but I survived and have now downed a packet of oatmeal and will go for a banana before I drink my tea.

A nice weekend

Posted in Uncategorized by Mike on January 11, 2009

I ate a bit more than I should have on Friday. I had an Amy’s Lasagna mid morning on Friday then found myself out and about later and had a small pasta dish at noodles. It wasn’t a ton of calories but more than I needed, it was delicious. That evening we stocked up on groceries for next week.

Saturday was decent food wise, egg sandwich, a bagel with cream cheese for lunch and nachos, yes nachos for dinner. We sometimes make nachos during football session but this was a much smaller batch than usual, that was good in a lot of ways, calories, stomach happiness and more. We had hoped to get to the gym but me being on call ruined that, I spent all morning dealing with  on-call issues. Then I spent the afternoon with other commitments. Kinda blew the day for training.

Today it was a bagel for breakfast, but three, yes three, servings of salmon for lunch. I had thawed them off earlier in the week and figured I needed to cook them. I figured I’d chuck two int he fridge for later in the week and that’s what I should have done but I didn’t. Instead I eat all three, they were delicious but I really didn’t need three. Dinner was a small serving of chili. to make matters worse for calories today, I probably drank more calories than I ate today, too many sweet caffinated drinks cause I was having trouble waking up. I’ll have to work on that, the good news is that today is an exception since we’ve come back from vacation.

I finally got to a workout today too:
40K kb  Sumo Deadlift X 5
32K kb Clean X 5/5
24K kb row X 5/5
12lb Medicine Ball Situp with a twist X 5
Pushup X 5
I forgot the push up for the first 5 rounds so only half as many of those.
A total of 10 round, I took a 5 minute break between rounds 5 and 6, other than that it was straight through. I haven’t reviewed the footage but something like 30 minutes of training there. I really, really didn’t want to do that last set. I did though, it left me feeling queasy and with a headache as a result.

I weighed myself after, I don’t recall perfectly, I want to say 257.6

Talking a mile a minute

Posted in Uncategorized by Mike on January 9, 2009

I’m conducting training these days for my coworkers. I have to use someone else’s material and cover 90 minutes worth of info in 60 minutes, plus take questions. It’s interesting.

Today was good, I woke up with a very small amount of muscle stiffness in my lower back from the clean and jerks. It cleared up as soon as I took a hot shower and hasn’t bothered me since. My sore throat is all but gone and I weighed myself this morning and found I was down 1.2 pounds.

22 minute circuit

Posted in Uncategorized by Mike on January 8, 2009

16K kettlebell
Clean & Jerk (or push press) 10/10
row 5/5
crunch Perform 10 times, took 22 mnutes

If I were to repeat it:
Have something on hand to make sure the count is actually 10 reps, it’s hard to tell if you did too many, too few or just enough after the frist 10 minutes.
Do 10 reps of everything even if it means dropping  a set.

Caused a good sweat with out too much cardiovascular issue or muscle issue.

meetings, expos and conference calls oh my!

Posted in Uncategorized by Mike on January 8, 2009

busy busy

No training last night, Laura and I were going to go to the gym but I was an hour late getting out of work, the oven was misbehaving and it was raining pretty nasty. Enough annoyances for a day.

Today is going well, had an egg salad sandwich for lunch. I’ve got a variety of meetings, training sessions and a tech expo keeping me moving about a bit more than usual today, it’s a good thing. They also offer a lot fo garbage food, they hade the cooled sodas out at 8 am. I had a yogurt.

Tonight is Chik-fil-a (or however they write it) because we need to rescheme our meal plan for a bit. Hopefully time for the gym. If not, I’ll try to do something at home.

‘nother day

Posted in Uncategorized by Mike on January 7, 2009

doing well today, after the “heavy” session. That was really surprisingly heavy. I think I may try to do 2 kettlebell sessions a week, a “heavy” and “light”. For the short term, light will mean 16K and heavy will mean 24K although I’d like to see those bump up. Additionally I may use some of the heavier, nearly untouched, bells in on the heavy days for some low rep stuff.

The throat is feeling marginally better, I’ve been using some hard candies that a coworker left as lozenges. It’s extra sugar but that’s all most lozenges are.

Today it was hard to wake up. It doesn’t sound like I was alone in this, I thought it was just post vacation malaise. Also my left calf seems want to tighten up. It started late yesterday. This happens occassionally, usually when changing uping training (in this case from 0). I don’t know the cure other than stretching it a bit more and being aware of it. If I don’t pay attention it can occasionally cramp.

I need to book a doctor’s appointment this month. I want to do the test, cholesterol, thyroid blood tests. Beyond that, I presume I’m relatively healthy. He’ll tell me I need to lose weight but I’m already working on that one.

We’ll call it “heavy”

24K kettlebell
20/20,15/15,10/10,5/5 = 50/50
I took whatever time I felt I needed to get my breath under control.
It’s been far too long since I moved that bell around, it felt awfully hard
