Gaining a bit

Posted in Diet and Bodyweight by Mike on November 29, 2007

I’ve been gaining with my protein drink, considerably. In retrospect, the cause is clear. I didn’t replace anything with it. I added it to what I already had. I figure I’ll end up heavy next Monday but I’m gonna make sure, in the mean time and after, that I have replaced some calories with the protein drink rather than adding calories with it.

I don’t normally go in for this stuff

Posted in Rant by Mike on November 29, 2007

I don’t do forwards and that sort of thing but Brent asked that I do the “5 random things” pseudo forward. Hey, the guy asked, what kind of person would I be to just leave him hanging out there?

So here you go.
By the way, if you don’t care to read, thats cool by me. Go check out the best piece of writing on the Psychosis of a Meathead or some stuff on a Super Size Me Rebuttal.

  1. I’m pro-green technology but not for the same reason as everyone else. I think the environementalists are doing the right things for the wrongs reasons. I think they are the most self serving group of doofs and they have no idea that they are. It could even be said that I am either a “Global Warming Denier” or “Pro-Global Warming” depending on your definition of Global Warming.
  2. Ideal Job: Stay at home Dad.
  3. I don’t feel that the US economy is threatened by China. It’s apples to orange, they’ll never be what we are and we’ll never be what they are going to be. I do think the US economy is threatened by the US mindset. The good news is that we have the power to help it anytime, the bad news is we may not have the discipline.
  4. I’m a hapless nerd. Don’t ask me a question that I don’t know the answer to and think you can just walk away. I’ll spend 45 minutes surfing the web with multiple tabs and come back with more information that you knew you didn’t know. I’ll bring it up again two weeks later with more obscure facts that I learned in the mean time.
  5. I suck at finishing things, not because it is hard but because it is easy. Once I have made it easy, I’d rather just let someone else do it and move on to something hard for myself.

So hungry…

Posted in Gym Strength by Mike on November 27, 2007

I’m surprised but I have been really hungry today. The only change, protein.
Last evening I bought a jug of Optimum Nutrition’s 100% Casein mix. This morning I fired up the blender about 1 1/2 to 2 cups of frozen berries and some ice cues. The berries blended well but when I added in the ice cubes I messed it up. All the protein seemed to coalesce around the cubes. So that made ‘drinking’ my shake interesting.  I think I will skip the cubes tomorrow.

After I drank my shake at about 7-7:30ish, I was full, really full. It was tasty and satisfying but I was wondering if I would get all my packed meals in today. Then, about 10 am it hit. I was hungry, really hungry. So I ate my salad. That did almost nothing. 20 minutes later I ate my main entree item. Then I made myself wait an hour, no matter what. About 1pm I threw down my nuts and berries, the last of the food I had for the day.  After work I hit the gym which always curbs my appetite for a bit but by the time I got home I was ready to eat, so I made dinner. I’m still struggling to not pig out.

This protein drink experiment may be interesting.

Today I went to Dumbarton (where I usually go on Fridays) rather than UB.

Ah, nuts. Poor food choices and taking yesterday off. Back at it.

In other news. My new diet plan.

Kidding, of course. I am considering making some changes though. Specifically, I have been doing an egg and whole wheat toast with peanut butter for breakfast. Nuts and berries for a morning snack and then salad and a protein for my other two meals during the day. I’m having a hard time getting fresh berries these days (way out of season) and am pondering a protein shake with frozen berries and peanut butter or something like that. Any opinions?

More tired than ever

I’m pretty sure you’re supposed to have a license to use puns as bad as mine.

Hit a semi tire with my 10K (not a mistype) hammer, ladder (10/10,20/20, 30/30,20/20 X 2, 10/10 X 5)
Run with the smaller tire (45lbs inside) across the soccer field and back(yrds)
all in one long super set

I didn’t take a watch or a heart rate monitor so I have no idea how long it took me. It was hard though. It’s in the upper 30s here and I was sweating up a storm in my shorts and t-shirt.  I have muscles that are already putting me on notice that tomorrow may be an off day.

I should probably also mention that yesterdays kettlebell video was the culmination of 30 minutes of kettlebell juggling.

I was just plain off

First, no music. But I’m willing to go beyond that. In fact, I train well in silence.  What I don’t train well in is an unholy mix of ESPN commentary and hip hop.

Concept II – Vent open
1,000 meters warmup
2,000 meters 2:05

I just quit. I couldn’t focus, my lower back has been feeling way off lately and listening to that crap was really messing with my ability to get any rhythm going .

Squat 300lbs 5 X 5
Chins 4 X 5 + 3 + 2
Overhead Press 155 3 X 5 + 3 + 2

ugh

Monday Morning Weigh in: 229.6

Posted in Diet and Bodyweight by Mike on November 19, 2007

Well, my original goal was 230. I’ve hit it. I later said I would push on to 225 just to make sure I was below 230 at the end of the year and for this spring’s strongman and I’ll do that as well.

This week will probably be a bad on for training. My body needs a break and the gym is only open a couple days,  so we’ll see what happens there. The way I see it, I need to eat really clean the first half of the week. I will relax and enjoy, but responsibly, on Thanksgiving. Maybe I can hit 228 or better next Monday. I haven’t yet seen a 228 of any kind on the scale so that will rock.
