The Fog

Posted in Uncategorized by Mike on June 27, 2006

Today was like lifting in a fog. Not because I was dazed or anything, it was so bleed’n humid! After I went into the gym and got warm I looked around and all the mats were wet lie they just got mopped. It was from humidity. I’m not one for chalking up a whole lot but even I considered chalking the bar or my shirt for squats tonight.

Warmup
A few 24K kb snatches
squat 135 X 5
KB
225 X 3
KB
405 Walk out

Squat
285 X 20
I want to be very, very clear. I do not believe these were a legit 20 reps. In fact, for me they call into question my previous thoughts I had done 20 reps. I was not getting parallel or close in my opinion. Next time I work out and Dan is there, I may ask for some pointers. A) I don’t want to skip myself on my training B) I don’t want to think I can do something then embrass myself when I try to workout with someone.
135 2 X 10
two sets of squats as deep as I could go. I really was not able to hit parallel. I don’t know if you do not his parallel on Olys or maybe it’s a weakness, maybe inflexability.

Pushpress
185 3,1,1,1,1,1,1
I decided I WOULD do nine reps no matter what it took me. Once I start to weaken, the hardest part is returning the bar to the start position, it just seems to come down no matter how hard I try.

Pushpress lockouts, from about mouth level
135 3X3
pretty easy should have gone with 150

2″ Dumbell rows
L R
2.5 3
3 3
3 3
3 3
2 3
1.5
Really challenges the hands.

KB snatch 24K
5 X 10
It would take about 45 seconds to get 10 reps for both hands. I took about 1 minute 45 seconds rest then did it again.

btw, last night I did the Doc Indian Club routine. I’m using my 3″ dumbells. Holding one end where you put the weights. I have used spring collars to hold a 2 1/2 lb weight at the end. I also use thd 2″ DB with no weights and or a baseball bat depending on the movements.

Rainy Weekend

Posted in Uncategorized by Mike on June 25, 2006

Friday: Nothing. I was gonna hit the climbing gym but Laura was having a crap day so we hung out.

Saturday: 4 mile walk, rainy day. Considerable rounds of levering with the 10lb. sledge. I also did Docs Indian club workout, I’m still using FBBC 2″ dumbells and a baseball bat.

Sunday: It had rained for about 24 hours so I figured strongman was out. Hit the climbing gym for an hour. I have so much to learn, I signed up for a beginner class in July. I can climb the Vintro routes repeatedly and not be challenged. I can hit the V1 routes without fail. I struggle on the V2 courses. I think it’s a body movement thing. I think I need to study more and spend more time on the wall to get it down. The Gym offers an intro to movement class that I may need. V3s seem to be above my grip and strength level. I also learned that I need to spend some time getting my body stronger and getting my limbs strong.

I’m gonna try to hit some handstand pushups and Doc’s Indian club workout tonight.

20 Rep Dead

Posted in Uncategorized by Mike on June 22, 2006

Last night I played tennis for about and hour

Today I had a horrible day at work

This evening I got to work out and Dand was there. A very good time. Made up for the crap start to the day.

warm up with some hang clean and press 40K and 60K
Deadlift
225 X 4
275 X 4
315 X 4
365 X 4
225 X 20
This was clearly too light of a weight but the 20 reps caused the posterior chain to get a nice workout it doesn’t normally see. It made a good workout for the hands though.

Dumbell Bench
95lbs 3 X 6
a good workout but a hair light. I will have to figure out how to use my dumbells next time and try to push it to 100

Pull ups
3, 2, 1/2
these suck. I need help

2″ Dumbell Row
70lbs 3 X 6
more of a hands thing than a back thing. A good exercise though

2″ DB 70lb
clean
3 Press
rest
clean
3 Press

Just to be totally clear, on the 2″ dumbell exercises, I am guesstimating the handle ro be 10lbs. I have not weighed it as such.

So Thats What 10 Lbs Feel Like

Posted in Uncategorized by Mike on June 20, 2006

Tried to play a bit of tennis yesterday. It had just rained so it was humid as can be and the court was damp with puddles. We tried for about 45 minutes.

Dumbarton tonight:
warmup:
clean and press
40K X 3
60K X 3

Oly Squat
135 X 3
225 X 3

Walkout 405

Oly Squat
285 X 20
ten lbs more than last time.
This time it looked a little better than last time. I keept the form clean and kept moving pretty well. I kept breaking the numbers down. Got 8, three more sets of four, got 12, two more sets of three, got 16, two more of two, got 17 three more singles.
I have come to believe that if you normally squat one breath to rep and allow yourself some extra breaths when doing the 20 rep squat, if you can do it 10 times, you can do it 20. That may just show how out of shape I am though.

Push Press
185 2, 1, 1
not very good. could have been wobbly from the squats

Bent over rows
150 6, 6, 6
too easy

Dips + 50lbs
3, 3, 3

Pull up
3, 3
dead hang each time

Waddle lifts
After a lot of help from Chris Rice I got my knots all shaped up.
Unfortuantly someone screwed with the loading pin and broke it. The other one has a loop that is too small for my caribener. I have not figured out plan B yet.

On The Rocks

Posted in Uncategorized by Mike on June 18, 2006

Not really, I went to a climbing gym. I had a good time. I didn’t take a buddy and haven’t taken their belay (sp?) course so top rope climbing was right out. The had this large wall that was probably 25 feet high for aadvanced climbers where you clip yourself in as you go. The recommended I try the bouldering course, I think that was a good idea for today.
Basically a third of their gym doesn’t require any kind of rope or harness a good start for a beginner like me and a good place to go if you just want to kill 30-45 minutes. I had fun and my grip got a good workout. Toward the end I was getting more confident and doing some better holds than the obvious ones where there is an actual grip for you to grab. I can’d do any of the large bubble type ones or the little tiny ones but I did a couple that were like smoothed blocks coming out of the wall, likea tactical pullup type thing.
I didn’t realize it for the first half an hour I was there but they had the courses mapped out and graded. The V1 courses (one being the lowest) were very easy but a good place for me to get started. I could do most of the V2 courses although I may have been cheating on a couple. I grabbed a couple unmarked holds or a couple holds without my color on them. I couldn’t always make the leap four feet to the next one. So I did it anyway. I tried a couple V3s but usually go hung up on some grip I couldn’t manage.
It was interesting to watch the experienced people; light, strong and quick versus the newbies; light, weak and feeble. I fell into a different catagory all together; heavy, strong anf slow. I would hang off two hand holds with my feet in the air for a while, I just had no idea where to go. I would like to do some more of this kind of thing in future. I’m considering a pai of climbing shoes. They would quickly pay for themselves versus renting.
For the first half an hour I climbed a lot and the gym was mostly quiet. Then it started to get busy and I was getting tired so I slowed down a bit. It was then that I realized there were marked courses. I started to move around more and try different areas of the walls an play with my grip more. I learned a lot too. At one point I was hanging off the wall by my right arm trying to find a position for my left and couldn’t. I could see someone waitingfor my area so I just dropped. The next time I grabbed the wall, something felt wrong. Turns out I ripped a couple layers of skin off between the last two knuckles of my pinky. Didn’f hurt but felt really weird. I decided to call it a day there.

So I end my weekend, not quite as sunburnt and exhausted as I expected but I got some good workouts in and feel good, refreshed actually. I guess everybody IS working for the weekend or at least I am.

Bike

Posted in Uncategorized by Mike on June 17, 2006

We didn’t bike as far as I would have liked but it’s my fault. I was getting saddle sore. I forgot how long it had been since I rode a bike. So we rode 20 miles in about 2 1/2 hours.
After that we found the climbing gym near the Gold’s she likes to go to. So I think I may try the climbing gym tomorrow. That should be a good time.

Tennis

Posted in Uncategorized by Mike on June 17, 2006

Played tennis for about an hour and a half last night. I really ran out of gas at the hour mark. I need to work on my energy levels. I do well at the max effort level, a few seconds at most, I recover quickly and can do it again. Once you hit a few minutes in I start to get gased. If I go for ten or so minutes at high intensity I am toast. Even a t low intensity I burn out in an hour or so. I hope once I move and get better sleep, I can get up early enough to start jogging on occasion, I think that would help.
Off to ride bicycles today. I’m not sure how long or far, a couple hours at least. Tomorrow I will be visiting a traditional gym. I haven’t figured out what to do with it yet.

I wasn’t loving this workout tonight but that is not the workout’s fault.

Hang snatch
40K X 3
50K X 3

Snatch
60K X 3
70K fail

Clean
70K X 3
80K X 3
90K X 3
100K fail
by this point I was feeling a little smoked. I think it was a busy hectic workday and a crappy week more than anything else. Not excuse, just pointing out that it’s not the workouts fault that it wasn’t working tonight, it was me.

Deadlift
225 x 3 DO
275 X 3 DO
315 X 3 DO
365 X 3 DO these were three singles, unlike the above, The grip was killing me and the pull was harder than expected too
405 X 2 Mixed, also singles. Pulled one with the left arm underhand. It was sore at first but not a big deal.
455 FAIL, I tried three seperat times. I gave it my all on the second one. I broke it off the ground, got it maybe six inxches and ust hovered for a couple seconds. I’m considering trying some pulls with chains as the top seems to be the weaker part of my pull

2″ Waddle Pull – based on the waddle walk I have to do in August, I hang a cord off the middle of my 2″ dumbell and pull from the outsides (where the weights go). The weights hang off a loading pin attached to the cord.
One pull each
50
95
140
185
225
270
300
315
340
350
I stopped it there. I was doing ok but didn’t want to push it. Last time my cord snapped and I think that is what injured my bicep. I went and got me a 1500lb test cord but I didn’t trust my knots a lot. I should have gotten a longer cord so I wouldn’t have to sweat it as much.

Went and tried to play tennis with Laura again. Neither of us were as on top of it as we were last time. Ah well.
